According to sources, the owner of Aastha Laboratory, a pathological lab near Chanchol rural hospital, was allegedly running a maternity clinic illegally for the last few years.

On Monday afternoon, Rekha Ghosh, (35), a resident of Shankarpala village was brought to the clinic. However, after treatment her condition started to deteriorate and she died. As the news of her death spread, locals started to agitate. Officers of the Chanchol police station rescued owner Sanjib Das from the mob.

Jyotsna Ghosh, a relative of the deceased, said, “Rekha has three daughters and a son. Her husband, Bablu Ghosh, is a daily labourer and works outside Bengal. Rekha was four months pregnant. When her condition deteriorated, she was administered an injection. When she came home, she suffered a miscarriage.”

Rekha was again taken back to the clinic and then released around midnight. Her condition again worsened and she was readmitted to the clinic where she died early in the morning. A local alleged that Bappa used to perform abortion. “The woman may have wanted to abort her baby. She died due to wrong treatment,” said the local.
