The next round of the polls will take place on July 19 in Howrah, North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas in a climate of threats, provocations and outright physical violence, created largely by Trinamool leaders. Three persons died during the second leg of the elections on July 15.

During the Tuesday-Wednesday night, a Trinamool worker was killed, for which CPI(M) leader Sattar Mollah, among others, was arrested.

Supporters of the CPI(M) and Trinamool clashed in North 24 Parganas and houses were demolished on Thursday. Bombs were allegedly hurled at the car of a poll observer. The local officer-in-charge of a police station was injured.

“We are fearing large-scale violence not only in the third phase but all around. If senior leaders of the Trinamool openly ask their workers to burn houses and throw bombs, what else can be expected? We demand a proper deployment of the central forces, which are kept idle,” said Pradip Bhattacharya, president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee.

Gautam Deb, state secretariat member of the CPI(M), said: “They have initiated a reign of terror in villages, are  ransacking and torching houses, and have a grand plan of violence on the poll days.
