A 19-year-old youth was shot at in Baranagar on Saturday while confronting eve-teasers who passed lewd comments at his sister, in a near rerun of the Barasat incident. Two years back 16-year old Rajib Das was stabbed to death while protesting against his sister being eve-teased.

The victim, Mangal Sardar, is a resident of nearby Indiranagar in Dum Dum Naupara and works in a paint factory at Bonhooghly.

The incident occurred at 2pm in front of Lake View Park when two class 10 students of Bonhooghly Sarada Vidyapith, Pritha Das and Payal Bharati, were returning from tuitions. Four youths on a motorbike and two cycles, allegedly drunk, intercepted them and started making obscene gestures.

“My son had returned from work and went out with some friends for an afternoon stroll. Payal met Mangal on the way and recounted the incident. Meanwhile, two of the youths were following the girls. Angered, Mangal confronted the eve-teasers and an argument broke out. One of the youths then whipped out a oneshooter and fired at him,” Mangal’s father Bhola Sardar, a rickshaw-puller by profession, told HT.

Mangal had a bullet lodged in his right shoulder and was admitted to RG Kar hospital, where his condition was said to be stable.

On Saturday, when this correspondent went to room number 30 of the operation theatre on the ground floor of RG Kar hospital, Mangal was sitting on the bed with his right arm in a sling, looking pale and scared. He sat motionless on the bed.

“Mangal has given us a detailed description of the two suspects. We have made a sketch of the suspects and have launched a manhunt,” ADCP Belgharia Biswajit Ghosh said.

On February 14, 2011, just a week before he was scheduled to appear for his Madhyamik examinations, Rajib Das was stabbed to death by some youths in Barasat who pursued his sister Rinki and sprinkled alcohol on her. The incident sent shockwaves throughout the state.

Saturday’s incident in broad daylight stunned residents of the sleepy Araishi bazaar area. The lane adjacent to Denmark Industrial Complex where the incident took place is sparsely populated.

“As Mangal fell down, his friends pursued the criminals who shot at him. But they were able to escape,” Bhola Sardar told HT.

“Mangal used to consider Payal as his sister. He always protested against any wrongdoing. Saturday was no different,” said Mangal’s friend Biplab Rajbongshi.
