An 80-year-old man was bludgeoned to death apparently over a property dispute on Tuesday midnight. His body bearing injury marks on the head and other parts was found lying near his house on Wednesday morning.

The victim was identified as Maya Ram of Gosaiganj's Surai Gudauli village. He was unmarried and his younger brother Khushi Ram's family used to take care of him. He however, stayed separately in a tubewell room near his agricultural field.

According to reports, Maya Ram slept at the tubewell on Tuesday night after having food at his younger brother's house. He was found dead when his younger brother went to the tubewell with morning tea for the victim.

Gosaiganj station officer (SO) RP Yadav said the victim was attacked with a cane on his head while he would have been fast asleep. He added, the cane with bloodstains was found near the spot.

"The victim owned a large farming land and several relatives were eyeing his property as he was unmarried," said Yadav.

The SO said the victim had named the property in his younger brother's children around 5-6 years ago.

The victim's other relatives had strained relationship with him since then and this could be the reason behind his murder, claimed Yadav.

He said, "We are further probing the matter and trying to collar the assailants after registering an FIR of murder against unidentified persons."
