The state government on Friday announced that the Taj city would be the first ‘solar city’ of the country.

Minister of state for alternative energy (independent charge) Vijay Mishra said that a Detailed Project Report(DPR) has been sent by the Agra authorities for making the city as the first Solar city of the country.

“The work on the project in Agra would start once the Centre approves the DPR. The solar system in Agra would save more than 10% of the power energy,” the minister said to a question of BSP member Dharampal Singh.

Mishra said the Centre has given the approval for Agra solar city in October 2012 after it was sent for their nod by the district authorities in 2009.

To another question of Congress member Mukesh Srivastava, the minister said that the new solar power policy has been introduced in the state and during the current financial year, the state has achieved the target of 20 mw through solar power generation projects.

“The state has fixed target to generate 200 mw in the next financial year which will be extended to 500mw of power through solar projects by 201617,” he announced.
