Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday assured more financial facilities to the fighters of Emergency. The state government is already providing Rs 3000 monthly pension, free travel in SRTC buses with one attendant and free medical facilities to them.
Addressing a conference on the anniversary of imposition of internal emergency in 1975 organised by the Samajwadi Party sponsored committee on fighters for democracy, the chief minister said enhancement in more assistance would, however, depend on the improvement in the financial condition of the state government.
Pointing out that the contribution of fighters for democracy during the Emergency era could not be ignored, he said they were the role models for the younger generation. Emergency fighters forum is a potential political platform for the SP to target the Congress in the state.
The chief minister also released a documentary -Aapaatkal ke mahannayak-on Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav and his fight against Indira Gandhi regime in 1975. The documentary portraying Mulayam Singh as the champion of freedom and democracy has tracked down his life from small village Saifai (Etawah) to his rise to power in the state and the central governments.
With the Lok Sabha election fast approaching, the party has decided to release the documentary all over the state through mobile vans. The chief minister said the documentary would be quite useful for the younger generation as it was a historical collection.
During previous regime of Mulayam Singh Yadav (200307), the state government had provided Rs 1000 monthly pension and free travel in UPSRTC to the Emergency fighters. However, after installation of BSP government in 2007, these facilities were withdrawn. They were restored immediately after the arrival of the SP to power in 2012.
The chief minister, while assailing the previous Mayawati government for snatching the rights of Emergency victims, said he was committed to their welfare. Like the Emergency of 1975, the state too had five years of dictatorial government under Mayawati, Yadav commented.
Addressing the gathering, SP general secretary Dr Ashok Bajpai asked for more facilities to these fighters. He also highlighted the contribution of Mulayam Singh Yadav in the country’s politics. Senior journalist K Vikram Rao highlighted the political journey of Mulayam Singh Yadav.
