BJP general secretary Amit Shah, who has UP affairs under his watch, lashed out at the state’s ruling SP government on Thursday for its alleged minority appeasement and said the party would articulate the popular anger against the “release of terror suspects” and the “increase in cattle smuggling”.

Shah, who is known to be close to Gujarat CM Narendra Modi, also hinted his party would use other means of mobilisation to defeat the caste arithmetic of the ruling SP and the main opposition, the BSP.

Replying to a question on the possibility of Modi contesting the Lok Sabha polls from UP, Shah said “till now no candidate has been declared”, but made it clear that UP had a special significance in the BJP’s poll strategy.

“Parivartan ka rath (the chariot of change) will reach Delhi through Lucknow.”

Parrying more questions than answering them, Shah refused to comment on the controversy over LK Advani’s resignation from party posts and subsequent withdrawal, calling it a “closed chapter”.
