The incident comes only two weeks after a four-year-old girl was raped and murdered in the area.

While the rape bid was made at least three weeks ago, the girl’s family reported the matter only after the child started getting nightmares about the ordeal.

The victim’s parents, residents of Hardoi, lodged an FIR with the Vibhuti Khand police station on Tuesday evening, on the basis of which, the police arrested the accused and registered an FIR for attempt to rape under section 376/511 of the Indian Penal Code and section ¾ of Protection of Children from Sexual Abuse Act- 2012.

According to sources, the incident took place on June 26 when the girl and her 11-yearold brother had gone to stay with their maternal grandparents who were residing in an under-construction house in Vibhuti Khand.

The house belonged to an additional district judge posted outside Lucknow and the old couple was taking care of the construction work.

Vibhuti Khand station officer Pankaj Kumar Singh said, “A labourer had been eying the girl while she used to play around the construction site.

On the day, he lured her by offering some eatables and took her to the second floor of the underconstruction house, where he tried to rape the girl.

She was rescued when her grandparents and brother came rushing up after hearing her scream.”

Singh said the labourer fled from the spot and the girl went back to her parents in Hardoi and was staying there since.

Finally, on Tuesday the victim’s father, who is a property dealer, and mother, an advocate, turned up before the police to report the incident after the girl had recurring nightmares.

The SO said the girl was so scared that she was not ready to leave her parents.

“The police immediately launched a manhunt and arrested the labourer after registering a complaint.  The accused has been identified as Bahraich resident Ashok Kumar Lodh, 26. The accused was arrested when he was loitering around near Lucknow Public School in Viram Khand to find work,” said the SO.
