UP minority affairs minister Azam Khan said on Monday the state government would provide fresh houses for those displaced in the Muzaffarnagar riots and were afraid to return to their villages.

“Those living in relief camps would be rehabilitated at the earliest and under complete security. But there are some who still fear returning mainly because their community may be vastly outnumbered in their villages. Though we would be providing complete security to such people, in case they still feel insecure, the government would provide alternative dwelling arrangements for them,” Khan said in Lucknow on Monday.

“Some people want to turn UP into another Gujarat (where riots took place in 2002). We won’t let (the) maut ke saudagar (merchants of death) succeed in their nefarious design of dividing the people,” Khan said.

Khan’s comments coincided with the visit of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, party vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Muzaffarnagar on Monday.
