Devesh Srivastava is associated with the BSP. He was chairman of the co-operative bank during the previous regime and had immense political clout in the BSP government. Srivastava was married to Deepti in 2008 and they had a two-year-old son.

Indira Nagar station officer (SO) Taufiq Ahmad said that post-mortem report confirmed the cause of death as ante-mortem hanging, which suggested that the woman might have committed suicide.

He said the victim reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of a room at her Sector 14, Indira Nagar house. The apparent reason for her suicide was her strained relations with her husband.

Devesh’s two brothers Avnish and Pramesh were arrested after Deepti’s father Ramesh Chand Srivastava registered the case of dowry death against her husband and in-laws.

Devesh’s mother Lata, sisters-in-law Chandni and Ragini were also named in the FIR but they have not been arrested initially, he added.

Deepti’s father alleged constant harassment of his daughter by Devesh and his family. The complainant had stated that the victim’s husband and in-laws used to beat and abuse her regarding to pressurize her for dowry.

He termed the suicide murder as she had not been able to fulfil their demands.
