Celebrations foll owed the passage of the quota-in-promotions bill in the Rajya Sabha on Monday evening after the day witnessed the anti-quota lobby stopping the pro-reservation workers from entering some offices in Lucknow to work in support of the new legislation.

Office bearers of the Arakshan Bachao Sangharsh Samiti hugged one another and offered sweets in the state capital once the result of the voting on the bill was known.

Earlier in the day, proreservation workers were stopped from entering the irrigation department offices at Sinchai Bhavan by the agitating anti-quota employees. After being stopped, the pro -reservation workers staged a dharna and sang bhajans of Baba Saheb.

The presence of heavy police force prevented the situation from turning volatile.

Sajeewan, who wanted to work to show support for the bill, said, “All of them are my friends but they are stopping me from entering the office because they don’t want reservation in promotions. But I want quota in promotions as dalits occupy only 2% of the top positions even 65 years after independence.”

Meanwhile, there was a scuffle when the anti-quota group tried to stop some proreservation employees from entering the public works department (PWD) office. The police soon arrived on the scene to disperse the two sides.

The anti and pro-reservation workers almost came to blows at the office of the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) in Shakti Bhavan when the two sides were raising slogans in favour of their demands.

The agitating anti-reservation employees outnumbered the pro-reservation staff who chose to work in the office.

Tempers also ran high as pro-reservation employees of Rajkiya Nirman Nigam (RNN), Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) and Krishi Bhavan, were not allowed entry into their offices.
