Bodh Gaya: Security increased at Buddhist spots

In view of the terror attack in Bodh Gaya, the Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday sounded alert at four Buddhist spots located in Uttar Pradesh.


IG (Law and Order) RK Vishwakarma said the district administration officials have also been directed to beef up security in Sarnath (Varanasi), Kushinagar, Shravasti and Kapilvastu (Siddharthnagar).

Extra police force has been deployed at all the Buddhist places and cops have been directed to frisk suspicious persons, he said.

Vishwakarma said the police officials of other districts have been also alerted and increase vigil.
 Importance of the Buddhist spots
1) Sranath- Located 30 km north east of Varanasi it is an important Buddhist spot. After attaining enlightenment in Buddha Gaya, Gautam Buddha delivered his first sermon in deer park Sarnath. The Buddhist Sangha came into existence here.
2) Kushinagar- Located 55 km east of Gorakhpur it’s an imprtant Buddhist pilgrimage spot. Gautam Buddha attained mahaparinirvan (died) here.
3) Shravasti- Gautam Buddha is believed to spent 27 chaturmases (stay during Monsoon season) here. Several Buddjist stupas, viharas and temples have been erected here.
4) Kapilvastu- Located between Lumbini (Nepal) and Sharavsti Kapilvastu is an important Buddhist spot. Capital of Shakya Republic, Gautam Buddha spent his early years here.
