The Smarak Sanrakshan Samiti was formed during Mayawati’s regime for the maintenance, security and cleanliness of the Manyavar Kanshi Ram Ji Green Eco Garden, Bangla Bazaar Smriti Upvan, Ramabai Rally sthal, Manyavar Kanshiram Ji Smarak Sthal and the Ambedkar Park.

After the change of guard in the state from BSP to Samajwadi party, a committee was constituted to ensure that these employees are utilised well. Now, the committee headed by the district magistrate has recommended to adjust the employees in other departments and the panel report has been forwarded to the state government for further action.

According to the sources, 570 workers will be retained by the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) in the samiti, while the rest of 5,430 workers would be accommodated in other departments. Bulk of the sanitation workers would be given to the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC), which is facing a shortage of sanitation workers, while the security and clerical staff would be diverted to other state departments facing crises.

LDA secretary Ashtabhuja Tewari said, “The Samiti was over staffed and they were not serving any purpose as most of them did not have much work to perform. Their services could be utilized in other departments as we have decided to accommodate only 570 staff members.”

Notably, most of the staff in these memorials is working as guards, sweepers and managers.

During November and December, 2012, around 250 sweepers were ordered to work with the LMC staff during the special sanitation drive. However, the Samiti sanitation
workers refused to work with LMC and staged demonstrations criticizing the officials.

The sanitation workers were demanding the directives in written which was not possible for the higher officials because the terms of service of these employees were such that they were supposed to work only inside the memorials.

From then the higher officials were waiting for the tenure of Samarak Sanrakshan Samiti to end.
