Central Command turns 50

As many as 3,000 former servicemen, widows and veer naris (widows of martyrs) attended the mega ex-servicemen rally organised by the Central Command here at Lucknow Race Course on Saturday. The rally was organised on the eve of the golden jubilee celebrations of the command.

Lt Gen AK Misra, chief of staff, Central Command , the chief guest on the occasion, distributed specially modified mobility scooters among disabled soldiers and felicitated the Veer Naris. Interacting with former servicemen, Lt Gen Misra reiterated the army’s resolve to ameliorate their problems and highlighted a string of initiatives launched for their welfare. “Composite facilities, ECHS polyclinics, housing projects, old age homes, ESM helpline and online clearance of medical bills are some of the programmes currently underway in the central command,” he said.

The veterans were also briefed on the success of the Surya Kiran torch relay, which is traversing across Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkand, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and Orissa. More than 27 such rallies, 14 medical camps and 300 Veer Naris were felicitated during the 60-day torch relay programme. The relay is likely to reach Lucknow on May 30.“Since its launch in September last year, under the Desh Seva programme, Central Command reached out to more than 3.75 lakh ex-servicemen, resolved 70% of their grievances brought to notice, felicitated 1,170 Veer Naris and organised 29 medical camps,” the Lt Gen added.
