The BJP on Sunday expressed its inability to stay clear of the VHP's revival of the Ram temple movement because of the "provocative" action by the UP government aimed at appeasing a community.

"Our concern was limited only to the fact that the government should not have banned the chaurasi kosi parikrama but now they have forced us to accept the challenge by rounding up our innocent leaders and workers from various parts of the state," UP BJP president Laxmi Kant Bajpayee told HT on the phone.

Bajpayee said the police arrested party leaders when they were holding poll management-related meetings in districts such as Hamirpur and Banda.

He alleged the SP government was creating communal tension in the state.

The BJP would chalk out a strategy by late Sunday night or Monday morning. "I am on my way to Lucknow from Varanasi and am constantly in contact with party leaders to decide how to react to the police high-handedness," Bajpayee said.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader and Union steel minister Beni Prasad Verma criticised Congress leaders of UP over the "underhand deal" between the SP and the BJP on the "chaurasi kos yatra" (a journey of 305 km) and said it had sent a wrong signal to the party workers.

The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) demanded the state government release a white paper on the huge public money spent in the name of security.
