It’s time for mango diplomacy. Ambassadors of 12 countries will take a stroll in the mango orchards of Malihabad, interact with farmers and have a taste of Dussehri and other varieties of the fruit on Saturday.

The mango party will be part of the Mango Growers’ Association’s three-day festival in Malihabad aimed at promoting Dussehri variety in the overseas market. Though these mangoes are famous worldwide, the export market is limited to a few countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Tariq Anwar, minister of state for agriculture and food processing, will also attend the gathering as a state government representative.
A collection of poems - ‘Aamnama’ - penned by Sujail Kakorvi will be released on Saturday.

The envoys will explore the possibility of Dussehri exports to their respective countries where it is not grown because of the extreme weather conditions. UP produces nearly 36 lakh metric tonnes of mangoes with the Malihabad-Mall-Kakori belt accounting for 4 lakh mt. Despite this, the export figures have never been too encouraging. Even Maharashtra has done much better on this front.

“This is just a beginning. Hopefully in a year or two, farmers can expect to get value for their money and hard work when the foreign market grows,” said Insram Ali, president of the association, while talking to Hindustan Times.

Envoys who have confirmed their visit are: Echarib Mohammed-Hacène, Ambassador of Algeria; Saad Avdis, Ambassador of Bosnia; Yogesh J Karan, Ambassador of Fiji; Kapila Forseka, Ambassador of Sri Lanka; Chandra Dutt Singh, Ambassador of Trinidad and Tobago; Ruslar Akhmet, Ambassador of Kazakistan amongst others, said Siraj Mahdi, former MLC while addressing the gathering.

The diplomat will be presented with a mango sapling as a token of rememberance of their visit to the mango belt.
