After the death of naib subedar Shiv Kumar Pal, his wife Madhu Pal is not sure what the future holds for her and her two children even as her relatives have demanded a state government job for her in Lucknow.

“I do not know where to go from here. I have two children studying in Delhi. But Delhi is not safe. I think I should live here in Lucknow,” said the temporary employee with the National Commission for Women in the national capital.

For her, it was an irony of fate that her husband returned home in a coffin a month before he had promised to back on May 10 on completing his six-month deputation in South Sudan. He had made the promise to his wife Madhu Pal during their last telephonic conversation.

“I spoke to him four days ago. He said he could not call me for some days because of network issues. He had promised to come to Lucknow on a holiday on May 10,” said Madhu who came to know about the incident on Wednesday morning.

The couple had planned to settle in the state capital after the naib subedar’s retirement. They had even bought a plot at Ratan Khand in Aashiana to realise their dreams. But that was not to be. The soldier died two and a half years before his retirement.

Hemant Kumar Pal, a close relative, said, “All her relatives live in Lucknow. It won’t be safe to stay alone in Delhi. The government should give her a job here.”
