Dug-up roads leave Lucknow commuters huffing-n-puffing

Dug-up roads in city have become a source of nuisance in Lucknow. They are not only leading to traffic snarls but are also becoming a major source of health-related problems on account of dust.

Basically, the problem is due to lack of coordination between various departments such as Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC), Jal Nigam, UP Bridge Corporation, LESA, and various telecom companies. Besides, the engineers working at the sites told HT, the entire work of laying the sewer pipes could take more than five months to get completed.

Meanwhile, LMC officials say, most of the roads in the city are dug up by Jal Nigam under the JNNURM projects.

Areas like Gwari Gaon, parts of Gomti Nagar, Faizabad Road, Shakti Nagar, Sanjay Gandhi Puram, parts of Indira Nagar, Ismailganj, Matiyari crossing are dug up. Besides, residents of Mahanagar, Aliganj, Triveni Nagar, Kalyanpur, Paltan Chhawni, Khurram Nagar, Mahanagar extension, Jankipuram have been suffering the menace for the last two years at a stretch due to various reasons.

The heart of the city too has not been left out. The Vidhan Sabha Marg in front of Hussainganj has been dug up for cables by LESA. Besides, parts of Faizabad road were dug up by private telecom operators. These agencies have no coordination at all with the LMC when it comes to digging of road.

“The work has been going on since 2011 and we have no choice but to inhale dust,” said JN Pandey, a resident of Mahanagar extension. “Number of children fall into the pits, but the Jal Nigam never bothers to listen to our problems,” he added.

The Lucknow Sewerage Yojana under JNNURM has left the residents of Mahanagar, Vikas Nagar crossing till Rahimnagar crossing face problem due to dug up roads, and traffic jams.

City engineer and incharge of JNNURM projects SK Jain says, “There are norms about road cutting but seldom are they followed. Ideally, a stretch of 100 metres should be cut and then filled up and left for compaction, after that next 100 metre road should be taken for laying of sewer pipes. But it’s economically feasible that’s why roads are dug up in larger patches around 1,000 metres and then sewer pipes are laid.”

From Faizabad road to Matiyari crossing and other trans-Gomti areas, around 355 kilometres of sewer pipes have been laid down while 150-kilometre stretch is still to be managed.

Similarly, in old city areas of Daliganj, Mankameshwar marg, Faizullahganj, Triveni Nagar and Paper mill colony, around 490 km of sewer pipe has to be laid down out of which only 70% is complete. Engineers of Jal Nigam, performing the task, say it will take more than five months to complete the work. One of the engineers said work during the rains would be halted so the residents of the area would have to suffer a bit longer.
