As part of the measures, WPL will ask school managements to prepare a database of drivers so that they can be kept under constant vigil.

Display of 1090 stickers on school vehicles will also be made mandatory.

Deputy i nspector general (DIG), Lucknow Range, Navniet Sekera, who also supervises the Power Line, made an announcement to this effect after Hindustan Times carried a report based on a letter of a girl who shared the harrowing experience of her friend.

“The facts narrated by the school girl in her letter are shocking. We promise certain measures that will ensure that girls don’t face such ordeal while commuting to school,” said the DIG.

Sekera said he would soon hold a meeting of principals and managements to discuss the issue.

Educational institutions would be directed to ensure display of 1090 stickers on every school van/bus. And this would be mandatory even for private vehicles ferrying schoolgirls, said the DIG.

The DIG said schools would also be asked to collect detailed information of the drivers like photographs, phone numbers, address and information about the vehicles being driven by them.

Through these details, the WPL staff would be able to keep crosschecking the credentials of drivers randomly. He said this would also make the drivers feel that they are under constant vigil and any wrongdoing could land them in trouble.

The WPL also plans to extend its network to the classrooms by deputing representatives called Power Angels.

DIG Navniet Sekera said, “We are coordinating with at least 30,000 schools and colleges in the state and their principals would be asked to suggest names of the girls who could be made Power Angels.”

These Power Angels would help victims approach the WPL.

He said one Power Angel each would also be deputed in around 53,000 village panchayats of UP.

“Arvind Singh Gope, minister of state (rural development) too had assured us help in promoting WPL and spreading awareness about 1090 in rural areas,” added Sekera.
