Friday's conference, 'Prabuddh Varg Sammelan', comes close on the heels of BSP supremo Mayawati's 'Brahmin Mahasammelan'.

"Brahmins are not only "manavtavati" (humanitarian) but they also did not do any atrocities on anyone. In this way they are true Samajwadi. Brahmins and Rishis always talked of equality and are the true Samajwadi.

"They are the one who led freedom movement and contributed to the freedom of the country," Yadav said.

He said that there were 13 Brahmin ministers in chief minister Akhilesh Yadav's cabinet.

The sammelan was organised by state agriculture minister Manoj Kumar Pandey at party headquarter here.

The former defence minister also told the gartering about the steps taken by the SP government to promote Sanskrit, a language associated with the Brahmin community.

"Sanskrit is the mother of all the languages...it should be promoted. My earlier government has taken a number of initiatives for this....," Yadav said.

Yadav also asked two ministers Rajendra Chowdhury and Brahma Shankar Tripathi, sitting on the dias, about the steps taken by them and the state government to promote the language.

Expressing concern over the rising corruption, Yadav appealed the Brahimns to play a construction role in this regard and teach the society.

Yadav, who was chief guest of the function, said that his party had first time organised such a huge conference of upper castes and promised to do whatever he can for them.

22 Brahmin MLAs had won on SP tickets in the 2012 Assembly polls out of 42 fielded by them.
