The Congress has finally climbed onto the SP-bashing bandwagon and raised the Gujarat bogey ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. The SP and the BJP had joined hands to replicate the Gujarat model (of communal violence) in Uttar Pradesh, the party said on Tuesday.

“Muzaffarnagar violence is a repetition of Gujarat model. I had expressed apprehensions that the Gujarat model of violence might be repeated in UP. I never expected this to take place so early,” said Madhusudan Mistry, AICC general secretary (in-charge UP).

Then, training his guns at CM Akhilesh Yadav, he added, “If a chief minister cannot protect life and property of the people, he has no right to continue in office”.

There were a lot of similarities in the pattern of violence in Muzaffarnagar and Gujarat, Mistry said. The violence in Gujarat took place whenever the state faced elections. In both places, small, personal issues were turned into major communal issues. This was the result of efforts at communal polarisation. “The only difference I see is that after the violence in Gujarat, the bodies were taken for a round in villages. It was no so in Muzaffarnagar,” he said.
