The representatives of 17 backward castes, which were accorded the scheduled caste (SC) status during the previous Mulayam Singh government in the state, will hold a big conclave here on Saturday.

The conclave, sponsored by the ruling Samajwadi Party (SP), would be held at the party’s state headquarters. During the conclave, the representatives of these castes will demand restoration of the SC status that the last Mayawati government had withdrawn. Both SP national president Mulayam Singh Yadav and chief minister Akhilesh Yadav will participate in the conclave.

A fortnight ago, Mulayam Singh Yadav had assured some representatives of these castes that the current SP government would restore the SC status to them as per the poll promise it had made in the election manifesto.
