Passengers might soon be served sugar free meals on board long distance trains. While the facility would begin in special trains including Rajdhani and Duranto Express, it would eventually be extended to other trains as well.
For this, the Indian Railway’s official catering agency - Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC)- is in consultation with nutrition experts to design a special menu for diabetic passengers.
“Given the demand for sugar-free meals and juices in trains, we have decided to roll out a meal for diabetics. Nutritionists will help us come up with some
healthy and sugar-free options,” an IRCTC official confirmed.
Although the exact date when the meal would be introduced is yet to be decided, sources said passengers traveling by first AC on the Rajdhanis would get a choice of coconut water and natural juices without added sugar from April 1. Similarly, fibre biscuits would replace regular ones in the low calorie meals.
Depending on the response, the facility would gradually be extended to the AC 2 and AC 3 class coaches also, the official said.
