The Indian Railways has a long way to go before it can claim to have provided a safe travelling atmosphere for women on its trains.

Even the Shatabadi and Rajdhani Express are not safe for women passengers, specially those travelling solo.

Two BSF jawans were arrested on Monday afternoon for allegedly molesting a woman co-passenger in the moving Sealdah Rajhani Express near Mughalsarai while an elderly woman was thrown out of the moving Shatabadi Express after being robbed in Ghaziabad on Saturday.

However, the spurt in crime against women on trains has apparently failed to move the railway authorities.

Apart from the sleeper and general compartments, where incidents of loot, theft and eveteasing go unnoticed, the AC coaches are also ‘prey field’ for criminals.

“One needs to think twice before booking at ra i n journey ticket. Even AC compartments are not safe for women,” said Sadhna Mohan, a regular commuter. Figures show that maximum complaints of crime against women in trains are reported from AC coaches.

More than 200 cases of crime against women, including rape, molestation and misbehaviour, were reported across the country last year, according to the railway ministry data.

A total of 210 such cases were registered in 2012 against the 127 cases in 2011.

While molestation cases in trains have gone up from 52 in 2010 to 72 in 2011, the number touched 119 in 2012.

Rapes have also increased from three in 2011 to seven in 2012.
