The tension posed problems for the district administration of Faizabad where the curfew, imposed in some areas after the communal violence on October 24, was lifted. The tension erupted after members of one community protested against the arrests and alleged police misbehaviour with their families.

District magistrate Deepak Agarwal (who was later transferred) admitted that the members of one community raised anti-police slogans and closed down their shops in the city. He, however, denied allegations that police had entered one of the places of worship and some houses in an indiscreet manner.

The DM said that there was adequate police force in the district and all measures were being taken to ensure peace and order specially in view of the coming Diwali festival. Meawnhile, the peace committees have been activated and appeals are being issued for citizens to maintain restraint.

The communal tension had started from Rudauli, about 40 km from the district headquarters, during the immersion of Durga idols on Dussehra day on October 24. Later, it spread to Bhadrasa town, besides other rural areas. The curfew was imposed in the city Kotwali and other areas on October 25 which, after a phased relaxation, was completely lifted from Tuesday. Two people were killed during last month’s violence and property worth several lakh rupees was gutted in arson.
