The Jaunpur police arrested three persons on Wednesday for the murder of a high-profile tantrik, Ramesh Tiwari, who had a good rapport with top political leaders in the state capital. Tiwari was shot dead on November 15.
Those arrested have been identified as former village head Vijay Bahadur Singh, Virendra Bahadur Singh and Kaushal Kishore Singh. Kaushal is Virendra’s nephew.
Deputy inspector general of police (DIG), Varanasi range, A Satish Ganesh said: “With the help of surveillance, we were able to arrest these persons. They acted as informers for the shooters and provided them shelter,” he added. The police have launched a manhunt to nab the main accused, the DIG added.
In Lucknow, additional director general of police (law and order) Arun Kumar said besides the arrested trio, Dhirendra Singh, Bachai alias Lal Shankar Upadhyay, Amit alias Pandit and Tannu Singh were involved in the killing.
He said Dhirendra Singh, who runs a nursing home was the main conspirator, as he had a dispute with Tiwari over construction of the Kasturba Gandhi School. The others also had disputes with Tiwari for one reason or the other.
“As Tiwari was rising very fast, disputes were taking place continuously,” he said. The police had identified the two shooters too and they were on the run, Kumar said.
A week before the killing, a meeting was held in which the conspirators decided to hire the contract killers who were brought two days before the murder. He said that one of the arrested accused Kaushal was providing inside information to the shooters.
Ramesh Tiwari, 34, known as Guruji, was sitting in his house in Unchgaon area along with his family members when two motorcycle-borne youth in police uniforms came and opened fire, injuring him and his brother. Ramesh succumbed to his injuries. His brother Rajesh Tiwari, who was injured when he rushed outside the house to save Ramesh, is undergoing treatment in the state capital at present.
