Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday announced compensation worth Rs. 6 lakh for the family members of bomb blast accused Khalid Mujahid, who died under mysterious circumstances in Barabanki while being escorted to Lucknow jail after a hearing on May 18.

A delegation of Muslim clerics led by Imam of Tiley Wali Masjid, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, met chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Monday and handed over a memorandum demanding probe into Khalid’s death and adequate compensation to his family members.

The chief minister assured the delegation that the state government was sensitive over Khalid’s death and would ensure justice in the case.

On the demands of the family members of Khalid, the state government has already recommended CBI probe into the death.

Chief judicial magistrate, Faizabad, was conducting the judicial probe in the case. The state government has also constituted a high-level committee consisting home secretary Rakesh and ADG Javed Akhtarin in this regard, he said.

A panel of five doctors conducted the postmortem, Yadav told the delegation.

He added, “The family members of Khalid were present during the autopsy. ” The CM said, “The state government has suspended nine police personnel who were members of the escort team for slackness in duty. Acting on the complaint of the family members of Khalid, Barabanki police has lodged an FIR against 42 police officers.”

“The FIR has been recommended to CBI for probe. The state government has also removed additional district government counsel (criminal), Faizabad, for not pursuing the withdrawal of case against Khaild in the district court,” he added.

The state government has already appealed against the district court order in the high court.
