The UP crime branch will now work on the pattern of Delhi and Mumbai police for quick disposal of heinous crime cases.

At the receiving end for rising cases of crime, the state police on Thursday overhauled the crime investigation set-up in the districts by creating a separate post of the additional superintendent of police (ASP) crime in the districts.

The ASP (crime) will head the intelligence wing, investigation wing, crime-monitoring cell and the operation wing. The special operations group (SOG) and special investigation squad have been merged with the crime branch.

The new set-up will cut the power of the station house officers (SHOs) who inquired and investigated serious crime cases.

Talking to the media persons, ADG (law and order) Arun Kumar said the DGP had directed the superintendent of police of all the districts to appoint ASP (crime).

If there is no ASP rank officer, then a DSP rank officer will head the crime branch.

The investigation wing will have a serious crime cell, financial fraud cell and cyber crime cell under it.

The field unit and dog squad will be under the control of the investigation wing. The district crime record bureau (DCRB), anti human-trafficking unit, juvenile and narcotics have been attached to crime monitoring wing. A special weapon tactics team has been set up for the operation wing.
