Putting an end to speculations, social activist Anna Hazare finally admitted on Tuesday that he had differences with his associate Arvind Kejriwal on the issue of forming a political party. Hazare said he was strongly against floating a party as “politics makes people selfish”.

“Neither would I participate in electoral politics nor would I contest an election,” said Hazare. He, however, added, “I have told Arvind we have the same goal — to make India free from corruption. He can fight an election. I will go to the people and continue my work.”

Before leaving for Delhi to meet Kejriwal, Hazare had a closed-door meeting with some social workers. The participants unanimously recommended that Hazare’s movement should remain apolitical and that they should work for “change in the system” instead of becoming a part of it.

Hazare would meet Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi in Delhi on Wednesday. This is the first time that he has admitted to differences with Kejriwal on the issue.

“Let them form a political party. I will not be party to this decision. I will support only the candidates who I think are appropriate,” Hazare said.

“I made it clear two months back that I was not in favour of setting up a political party.”
