Congress would have a pre-poll alliance with the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) for the Maharashtra Assembly elections, slated in over two months, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Digvijay Singh has said.

"Both the parties would have a pre-poll alliance," Singh, who is touring western Maharashtra and Marathwada to take stock of political situation before the elections, said yesterday, adding an announcement on the alliance was likely soon.

"The party also hopes for an alliance with the Republican Party of India in the state and we want to ensure that communal forces do not come to power," he said.

Congress workers in the state are enthusiastic after the party's success in Maharashtra in the Lok Sabha elections, Singh said.
