Maharashtra university and college teachers intensified their indefinte `cease to work strike' for the 22nd day on Tuesday demanding a composite package for them including facilities for career propspects, pay hike and uniform leave.

Although several rounds of talks were held between teachers' representatives and the government officials on the demand package, no concrete solution has been evolved, the striking teachers under the banner of Maharashtra Union of University and College Teachers said.

The teachers went on a two-hour protest at the Fort campus of the university in south Mumbai today and said they expected a bipartisan agreement on the issues as their demands were within UGC recommendations and also they wanted everything in writing as to what the government was giving them and what they were not.

There are a number of bureaucratic hurdles in this and even the vice-chancellors of all the univiersities have written letters to the Minister of Higher and Technical Education Rajesh Tope asking for a solution favouring teachers, they said.

Asked whether Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the Universities, was approached by the teachers, they said "we have not."
