NCP activist held for thrashing 2 adivasis

A Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) activist and his supporters were arrested on Sunday evening for allegedly beating up two adivasis.

Ramesh Ambre and his supporters beat up Tikujiniwadi residents Prakash Gavande, 45, and his son Pankaj, 19, near Gokulnagar.

“We had started constructing a boundary wall on our land, which Ambre was opposed to. We have been fighting over this for the last one year. On Sunday afternoon, a scuffle broke out between his supporters and my son. We then came to the Kapurbawdi police station to register a complaint. We were asked to go to the Thane Civil hospital first to treat him. While we were returning from the hospital, Ambre’s supporters not only thrashed my son but also damaged our vehicle,” said Manda Gavande, 40, Prakash’s wife.

The Kapurbawdi police station has registered a case for rioting under the Indian Penal Code and under the Atrocity Act. “We have arrested Ambre and four of his supporters. Ambre’s office is adjacent to the Gavande’s land. He was opposing the construction of the boundary wall. He has also filed a complaint against Gavande and his son as one of his supporters was also injured. We have arrested Gavande and Pankaj as well,” said senior police inspector Prakash Gavane of the Kapurbawdi police station.

However, Ambre has refuted Gavande’s allegations. He said, “I was at the municipal corporation when this incident took place. I am not involved in this matter.”
