A 14-year-old girl from Mulund died of swine flu at a private hospital on July 17, taking the death toll in the city to 13 this month. The girl had been admitted to the hospital on July 16 as she was suffering from high fever. “The patient was put on Tamiflu the day she was
admitted. She was also bleeding from the nose, which is a symptom of leptospirosis. So she was tested for leptospirosis, swine flu and dengue. But she tested for positive only for swine flu,” said Dr G.T. Ambe, executive health officer of the BMC.

Thirteen more people, including four children, tested positive for H1N1 virus on Monday, taking the total number of cases in July to 300.

While two of these patients were admitted to hospitals, the rest were quarantined at home.

Among other rain-related illnesses, the civic hospitals recorded 91 cases of gastroenteritis, one case of leptospirosis, 96 cases of malaria and 277 cases of fever.

The civic body had on Monday organised five health-testing camps to help curb incidences of malaria. Of the 794 people who were treated, 105 tested for malaria, 166 were treated for fever, 240 for cough and 28 for diarrhoea.
