The two MLAs booked for assaulting police sub-inspector Sachin Suryavanshi in the Vidhan Bhavan premises, will have to spend at least three nights in the Arthur Road jail, as they have now been remanded in judicial custody. The Esplanade court has reserved the order on their bail application for Monday.

The two MLAs — Kshitij Thakur from Bahujan Vikas Aghadi and Ram Kadam of MNS — had surrendered before the crime branch on Thursday. They were sent to police custody, which ended on Friday afternoon.

By the time the duo could reach the Esplanade court, their supporters had crowded the court premises. The crime branch surrendered their custody, as they cannot complete the investigation in the absence of the victim, who is recovering in Bombay hospital. “The accused have revealed the names of the others who joined them in the attack, which we need to verify. As the officer who was attacked is in a hospital, we cannot proceed further,” said public prosecutor Kiran Bendbhar.

The court then remanded the two MLAs in judicial custody, after which they move a common bail application. The application stated that as they are members of the legislative Assembly, they cannot go absconding.

Inspector General (prisons) Vinod Lokhande said that they were brought to the Arthur Road jail. “They have been put in a separate cell,” he said.
