In the most stringent action yet in city against illegal sex determination, the Maharashtra Medical Council issued suspension orders to three doctors of an Andheri hospital.
Dr Ivan Rocha, Dr Prabhudas Solanki and Dr Romineni Somaiah were suspended for five years under the MMC Act and the Pre-Conception And Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act.
While Dr Rocha, a gynaecologist, is a consultant at JP Hospital, the two others are owners of the hospital. The doctors were implicated by a sting operation conducted in July 2011 by an organisation working for the girl child.
“Dr Rocha was caught on camera revealing the sex of a foetus; he also allegedly sent text messages to fix an abortion date for the woman activist carrying a girl child. The two others own the hospital and are punishable under the Act,” said an MMC official.
When HT called the clinics where these doctors practise, receptionists said that they continued to treat patients on a regular basis.
“The suspension will be in effect from the day they receive the suspension order from the council. We will also send the information about the suspension to the civil surgeon and the civic body, which has to ensure that these doctors don’t practice during their suspension period,” said Dr Kishore Taori, president of MMC.
In addition to the Mumbai doctors, three others from Solapur, Udgir and Kolhapur have also been suspended.
Two doctors from Navi Mumbai and Solapur have been issued a warning by the MMC. The doctors were found guilty of flouting the PCPNDT Act on various grounds, including non-maintenance of medical records.
So far, the state health department has submitted around 58 doctors’ names to the MMC.
Charges have been farmed in court against all 58 for violating the PCPNDT Act.
