Three youngsters were killed and two others injured when their speeding car crashed into a trailer on Palm Beach Road in CBD Belapur in the early hours of Monday.

“Prima facie, it looks like that the boys were drunk and were speeding. We are awaiting the post-mortem report for confirmation,” said Vijay Patil, deputy commissioner of police (traffic).

The 10-km road, which connects Vashi to CBD Belapur, has seen more than 300 accidents and 50 deaths in the past four years, most of which have been because of speeding.

The deceased include Atish Jambukar, 25, Rahul Thombre, 24, and Dinesh Thombre, 27, who was driving the car.

The group of friends, residents of Pune district, was heading home when their Ford Figo crashed into a trailer going to Uran.

“Dinesh seems to not have noticed the trailer, which was coming from the left at Killegaothan junction, and crashed the car into the middle of the trailer,” Patil said. “The impact was so great that the roof of the car came off. The victims’ heads were severed and their bodies mutilated.”
