Those who missed out on their dream home this time will have to wait for next year’s draw. The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has announced it will put up 4,500 apartments for next year’s draw. A major chunk of these houses will be constructed for the
economically weaker sections earning up to Rs. 12,000 a month. Only 200 houses will be for the Higher Income Group that earns more than Rs. 25,000 a month.

The houses will be constructed in Sion, Borivli, Mankhurd, Malvani, Kandivli, Goregaon and Ghatkopar.

Amarjeet Singh Manhas, President, MHADA (Mumbai Board) called the lottery an annual feature aiming to provide affordable houses to citizens. “We are trying our best to make housing affordable,” Manhas told Hindustan Times.

Application forms for next year’s draw will be distributed in January 2011 and the lottery will be held in May.

Hemant Tambe (46), a painter, who could not win a house on Tuesday, said he will keep trying. “I cannot even think of going to a private builder. MHADA is my only hope,” he said.

MHADA’s Mumbai board created a record of sorts when it successfully conducted three lotteries in the last three years in which more than 8,000 citizens have got low cost houses. They outsourced the entire procedure to private parties,
introduced computerised draws and improved the quality of MHADA construction.

The housing agency has revised the income brackets for future draws (see box, New Income Slabs) and is waiting for the state to sanction the new slabs.
