Four persons fled from jail and police custody in three separate incidents reported in the city in two days.

Surya David John, 27, escaped from Byculla prison under the pretext of disposing garbage on Monday. The Nagpada police said they were informed of the missing convict when he didn’t return after dumping the garbage. John, who was arrested by the railway protection force for trespassing and nuisance, was to complete his month-long sentence on April 27.

The police have registered a case under section 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) against him. “A departmental probe has been ordered into the case,” Vinod Lokhande, IG (Prisons) said.

In the second instance, Asif Chiliya, 35, who was arrested in a motorcycle robbery case a week ago, escaped while being presented before the Andheri court on Monday. Chiliya, lodged at the Taloja Jail, was being escorted by jail staff when he escaped from the bathroom of the Andheri magistrate court at about 3pm.

In the third incident, two youth arrested for house break-ins by the Santa Cruz police, escaped from their lock-up while the constables guarding them were asleep on Sunday afternoon.

According to the Santa Cruz police, Ravi Raghuvandan Das and Veerapan alias Tambi, both 21, used a broom to reach the keys lying near one of the constables.

While Veerapan was traced on Monday, the police are hunting for Das.
