An assistant commissioner of police (ACP) created his own team to catch the thief who broke into his Shivaji Park house and stole cash and valuables worth over Rs. 1 lakh, along with his service pistol, in August last year.

“I was chasing the culprits for the past few months. I had acquired CCTV footage from a nursery near my residence, which helped me track down one of the thieves,” said Ravindra Khandagle, ACP, Matunga division.

Two men had broken into Khandagle’s house and had fled with Rs. 20,000, ornaments worth Rs. 90,000, a watch worth Rs.6,000 and a camera worth Rs.7,000.

Three teams — the Shivaji Park police, Unit 5 of the crime branch, and the team created by Khandagle —were investigating the case.

However, the ACP’s team tracked down the accused, Ratansingh Jatav, 32, a resident of Dongri.

The investigations are not over yet as Khandagle is on the lookout for the second accused. “Jatav was handed over to the Shivaji Park police. We are looking out for his accomplice,” said Khandagle.

The accused told the police that he threw the service pistol in the sea at Worli.

“The weapon was practically of no use as it was stolen without a magazine and rounds,” said Khandagle.

“The credit goes to ACP Khandagle’s team as they are the ones who received the tip-off about the culprit and arrested him,” said Suresh R Unawane, senior inspector, Shivaji Park police station.
