For Anushree Deshpande, 20, a student of history, the ‘No TV Day’ has just taken an interesting turn. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) will be organising a photo exhibition of the archeological sites and historical monuments in Maharashtra at the Elephanta Caves, which will be open to the public for free on January 29 and 30.

“The prospect of taking a ferry ride to the caves and getting to see 2,000 years of history seems like a visual treat,” said Deshpande, who is also rearing to catch a glimpse of the migratory birds there.

“We have studied ancient Indian monuments in our syllabus, and we will only get a better understanding by viewing the ASI photographs,” she added.

From the Raigad Fort to the beautiful Kanheri caves, Sindhudurg Fort to the Shivneri caves-ASI will be exhibiting pictures of selected monuments along the Konkan and western Maharashtra strip.

“We are hoping to create cultural awareness among the interested citizens by presenting pictures with captions,” said Zulfiquar Ali, deputy-superintending archeologist, Mumbai.

“We will also distribute complimentary brochures and booklets comprising the works of the ASI, enabling the people to take the history back home,” he added.

“Owing to other commitments, it becomes very difficult for people to take time out and visit these beautiful places,” said MS Chauhan, superintending archeologist.

“What better day than the No TV day to look at these marvels, which will be free,” added Chauhan.

(Exhibition will be open on Jan 29 and 30, between 10am and 5pm)
