Relatives of the acid attack victim, 25-year-old Preeti Rathi, refused to accept the Rs2 lakh compensation announced by the state home minister RR Patil on Sunday, a day after she succumbed to her injuries.

“We will not accept the compensation. What we want is a thorough probe. We want to see the culprit behind bars,” said Lalit Solanki, Rathi’s cousin.

“If the government insists, we will donate the amount to a nonprofit organisation working for acid attack victims,” Solanki said.

The family is yet to receive the compensation from the Maharashtra government.

On Monday, the National Commission of Women (NCW), along with non-profits and acid attack victims called for regulation of the sale of acid in domestic markets and life imprisonment for attackers.
