A 25-year-old airline employee who was assaulted and robbed by two unidentified men near his Borivli residence on Saturday alleged that the police initially registered only a non-cognisable complaint and converted it into an FIR on Tuesday.

The victim, Abhishek Porwal, was returning home around 1.15am after meeting a few friends. Porwal was texting on his cellphone while walking down the SVP Road in Borivli (West) when one of the accused grabbed his left hand and took him between two parked trucks. The accused bit him and then snatched his cellphone.

The accused and his associate smashed Porwal spectacles.

With some difficulty, Porwal managed to free himself and began running. The accused chased him till he saw him reach his society.

A bleeding Porwal was taken to a local hospital by his parents. The family then approached the Borivli police to lodge a complaint. But the police only registered a non-cognisable complaint.

It was two days later that the police registered a case under Section 325 of the IPC for voluntarily causing grievous hurt. No robbery section has been invoked even thought the victim's mobile phone was robbed.

"We have registered a case and are looking for CCTV camera footage to get leads. We are also keeping tabs on Porwal's stolen cellphone," said an officer from Borivli police station.

Porwal said since it was dark and he had lost his spectacles, he was unable to see the faces of the accused. "Earlier, the police told my parents that I must have gotten into a drunken brawl with the men instead of taking my complaint," he said.
