The Antop Hill police were attacked by the family of notorious criminal Pappa Rajan Nair when they tried to nab him from his residence in Sion-Koliwada on Sunday.

The police said they had received a tip-off that the 32-year-old history sheeter was in Indira Nagar area of Sion-Koliwada. “We sent our special squad at 3pm to nab Nair, when his three sisters and he began assaulting policemen,” said SS Deshmukh, police inspector, Antop Hill. Nair’s sisters indulged in an altercation with the police, manhandling and even biting them.

“During the commotion, Nair managed to escape. We brought his sisters Laxmi and Radha to the police station,” he added. After a couple of hours, the police received information that Nair had taken shelter at another place in the same area.

“Although he tried to escape again by jumping off the mezzanine floor of the shanty where he was hiding, he was caught,” said Deshmukh. At the time of going to press, the police were in the process of registering a case for attacking policemen while discharging their duties against the two sisters.

The police also recovered a chopper from him.
