In an exhibition titled Partner a Master, 60 artworks by 29 children — including paintings, sketches, installations and video works — are being displayed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj museum at Kala Ghoda.

The works have been created under the mentorship of 14 contemporary artists from Mumbai and Delhi, including Reena Kallat, Shilpa Gupta, Prajakta Potnis, Sharmila Samant and Tushar Joag, each of who spent 16 hours with the children, between August 2012 and January 2013.

“The programme aims at presenting the children with mentors who can open new possibilities of learning and discovering through art,” says Ritu Khoda, founder of Art First Foundation, which co-conceived the programme along with arts and culture organisation Mohile Parikh Centre.

While 12 children are from Mumbai, 17 are from Delhi. They were selected from among art-inclined students from Classes 7 to 11 in select schools.

Artists have explored subjects such as the environment, urban life and happiness in the artwork.

“I had never interacted with an artist before and this programme gave me an opportunity to not just learn from them but also spend time in their interesting studios and get to know their perspective,” said Rhea Mehta, 17, from GD Somani school, Mumbai.

The exhibition, which will continue till June 21, will be open from 10.30am to 6pm except on Sundays. The entry fee is Rs. 60 per person.
