Revenge was the motive behind Sachin Shigwan, 29, burning Shraddha Langde, 23, a housewife who he had been stalking for the past four months, initial investigations reveal.
Both Sachin and Shraddha lived in Sainath chawl in Kandivli (East). Sachin would regularly call Shraddha and harass her. The number of calls had increased in the past week, after which residents of the area had intervened. Shraddha’s husband, Shashikant, had slapped Sachin in front of them when he apologised for his behaviour.
Sachin had been trying to cause problems between the couple for some time now, the Samta Nagar police said. The police also suspect that Sachin had started liking Shraddha.
Shraddha told police officials that Sachin had charged towards her screaming, ‘you people have spoilt my face in front of everyone [because Shashikant slapped him], and now I am going to spoil your face, and burn you alive.’
On Tuesday morning at around 9am Shraddha was watching television at her neighbour, Minal Zamin’s home. While Minal was washing clothes inside the house, another neighbour, Shabana Shaikh, 18, was with Shraddha. Shabana saw Sachin near the house and alerted Shraddha. After 15 minutes, Sachin barged in. He threatened to burn
Shabana who ran out of the house. Sachin shut the door from inside and sprayed an insecticide and lit it. The insecticide burst into flames burning Shraddha’s hair, back and the nape of her neck. “When Minal intervened, he asked her to move aside saying that he wanted to burn my face. But Minal put up a fight, and he burnt her face,” Shraddha told the police.
The women tried to push Sachin away but he kicked Shraddha and burnt Minal’s hand when she attempted to unlatch the door. However, they managed to rush out of the house and Sachin fled.
Locals said that Sachin had surrendered, but police officials claimed that they arrested him near his home a few hours after the incident. Sachin will be produced before a magistrate’s court on Wednesday.
