Just two after a model-cum-actress was assaulted in an autorickshaw, a 29-year-old man was beaten and robbed of his gold chain worth Rs62,000 by another rickshaw driver and his two accomplice on Monday night.
According to the police, around 10.30pm, Mangesh Kisan Babbar had boarded a share-an-autorickshaw from a stand near Nariman hotel in Kurla. He was on his way to Kalina.
When Babbar saw two more men sitting in the vehicle, he thought they were other passengers. He didn’t even think twice when he was asked to sit in the middle.
“Babbar, who was familiar with the route, realised that the rickshaw was heading to a secluded location. When he questioned the driver, the latter did not reply. When Babbar tried to raise an alarm, the two passengers started to punch and hit him,” said Laxman C Bhalerao, senior police inspector, Kurla police station.
“The driver stopped the vehicle at a secluded area on BKC Road. The trio then snatched the gold chain he was wearing and pushed Babbar out of the rickshaw. The chain broke in the commotion and a part of it was left with the victim,” he added.
However, Babbar tried to put up a fight. He held on to the steering handle to stop the driver from fleeing. But the men over-powered him and sped away, the police said.
Babbar then went to the BKC police station, where he was asked to lodge a complaint with the Kurla police as he had boarded the rickshaw from there.
The police have registered a case against three unidentified persons under Indian Penal Code sections 392 (robbery) and 34 (common intention).
Although the police have no leads in case yet, they are checking if any history sheeters were involved in the case. “The complainant couldn’t see the registration plate of the autorickshaw as it was dark,” said Bhalerao.
The police inspected the spot on Tuesday morning. “We even went through the CCTV cameras installed by a private establishment. However, it has not captured the incident,” said Bhalerao.
