Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Council, Vinod Tawde told reporters during his two-day tour of the tribal region of Thane district that his party would not allow the port to come up at any cost.

"The government should first clear all the doubts in the minds of the local people and go ahead with the project only after meeting their demands," he said.

The Maharashtra government has signed an agreement with M/s JSW Infrastructure Ltd in December 2011 to develop an all-weather multi-cargo port in a greenfield site near village Nandgaon in Palghar taluka, which will cost around Rs. 1,175 crore.

The MNS has also opposed the proposed port and said that all party members would come together to put a stiff resistance to the same.

MNS district rural chief Kundan Sankhe has issued a statement said that a public meet would be held on Sunday will discuss the issue in detail.

The local fishermen have been opposing the proposed port. President of Maharashtra Machhimar Kruti Samiti Rambhau Patil said that fishermen in the state would not allow construction of the port.

The proposed port is expected to handle about 8.4 million tonnes of cargo in year one rising to about 16.7 million tonnes in year 10 and finally to 75 million tonnes at the end of the BOOT period of 30 years.
