Identifying illegal cellphone towers in your neighbourhood will soon be easier, promises the BMC.

The municipal corporation has decided to upload a ward-wise list of all authorised cellphone towers in the city on its website, www.mcgm.in.

“The list will be uploaded next week,” said municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte. According to a BMC report prepared in 2010, 1,850 of the 3,705 cellphone towers in the city are unauthorised.

Questions have been raised, however, about the efficacy of this move. “Unless the stay order on action by the BMC is vacated, the illegal towers cannot be demolished. Thus, legal action needs to be initiated immediately by the BMC,” said Cuffe Parade resident Mubina Issa, who has a tower near her home.

On November 12, HT had reported how the civic body was planning to include a tab on its website to connect to the website of the union Department of Telecommunication.
