The federation on Sunday held a meeting at Khar, on the day that youth from across the city held a rally against Dhoble at Carter Road nearby.

They are planning a public meeting next Sunday, open to all citizens, to create awareness. Film producer and activist Ashok Pandit, retired ACP Shamsher Khan Pathan and members of various NGOs attended the meeting.

Calling themselves 'citizens for a better Mumbai,' the members of the federation said that they were working to protect the youth from getting corrupted.

"We are working towards a safer Mumbai. Pubs are becoming a source of drugs, which is why we are not supporting them. We are confident the commissioner will support us," said Anandita Thakoor, chairperson, H-west federation.

Expressing concern that the youth were becoming 'violent,' Pathan said: "Just like dance bars were stopped, we want a ban on pubs."

"We are supporting Dhoble because he is legally right. Partying is not wrong, but it must be done keeping in mind the law and society. We must make the police our friends and not get scared of them," said Surbhi Sharma, member, We the People Foundation.

"Dhoble took stern action in a few hours on an issue that we have been fighting about for years," said Pandit.
