In a bid to foil terror attacks, the police have started training licenced hawkers in crowded shopping hubs such as Hill Road and Linking Road in Bandra (West) so that they can keep an eye out for suspicious objects and activities and alert officials in time.

“There are many places in our region that are terror targets and we are taking all possible measures to avoid such incidents. We are meeting with hawkers and telling them how to identify suspicious objects in crowded areas and what they should do in a terror-like situation,” said Chhering Dorje deputy commissioner of police, zone 9.

The police are also conducting surprise checks at big malls and recently issued three warnings to two big malls in the western suburbs for not following proper security procedures.

“We are doing surprise checks at important installations and whoever is found to be negligent will get written warnings. We will also talk to the concerned departments to cancel their licences,” Dorje said.

Additional CCTV cameras have been fitted at places such as Juhu Chowpatty, Santacruz station, near Taj Lands End JW Marriott, Infinity mall and many other spots by traders and businessmen after meetings with the police. Around 78 CCTVs have been fitted near Santacruz station.

Private guards at malls, pubs and cinema halls are also being instructed on frisking. “Frisking is an important part of security check.

We are trying to use this hidden manpower to combat threats,” Dorje said.
